A common misconception about Texans is that we ride horses everywhere we go. This is not in fact true, but I will say that if it were efficient, that might be the preferred method of travel for many (including myself)! If you’ve never been horseback riding before, there is no better time to take your first ride than during the beautiful spring months of wildflowers and blooming greenery in Boerne. It is truly a sight (and an experience) to behold. I had the opportunity to experience this firsthand just a few weeks ago with Diamond C Stables, and it was a day I won’t ever forget!
Upon my arrival (I was a little early…and eager), I followed a trail back to the stables where many friendly staff awaited me and were preparing to make my experience a memorable one. Debbie, the owner, greeted me warmly and told me I was welcome to pet and visit with some of the other horses while I waited for my instructor. I walked up and down the aisles, saying hello and offering my hand for rubs and scratches to each of them. I found it so endearing that each horse seemed to have their own personality! Some were spunky and lively, while others were shy and mellow – mostly, they all seemed to be motivated by when the next chow time would be!
My instructor, Kateri, found me in the stables and said she was ready to head out! I picked out a helmet and followed her to the onsite arena. My horse, Bob, was saddled up and ready to go when we got there. I made sure to spend a few moments getting acquainted with him – petting him and stroking his mane. I got up on the saddle with ease and a little help from Kateri. She very quickly taught me how to go forward, backward, and side to side with the reigns, a swift kick, and click of the cheek just before Bob and I took a practice lap around the arena. After that, we were off to hit the trail!
This was a perfect day for a trail ride. It was a warm, sunny weekend in January, so I can only imagine that the weather will be even more perfect for a trail ride in the spring. Wildflowers are blooming, and the lush, green vegetation that the Hill Country is known for is getting ready to be here! We trotted along and meandered through the Diamond C property for one glorious, relaxing hour. Bob was great at following directions, and leading him through the landscape wasn’t difficult at all. I think we definitely bonded, and I have the pictures to prove it! Schedule your trail ride today with Diamond C, or book with Stricker Trail Rides! They are also available to take you on a trail ride through the rolling hills of Boerne.
All in all, I would definitely do this again. Maybe someday I will fulfill the dream of owning my own horse and take it for rides to the grocery store (wink wink)! Yee haw!
