With two decades of dedicated service, Gerald Jonas stands as a pillar of experience and leadership at the Boerne Utilities Customer Care and Billing department. As the Lead Meter Technician/Crew Chief, he plays a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless operation of utilities across the city.
Jonas, along with two meter technicians and an advanced metering administrator, oversees approximately 20,000 meters across the service areas for electric, gas, water, and reclaimed water.
When he started with the City of Boerne in 2003, Jonas was one of two meter readers who would canvass neighborhoods to check readings at each meter. He was part of the team to begin the transition to smart meters starting in 2010. While the need to manually check each meter has lessened, it hasn’t gone away. And with the new technology, the work never slowed down as the number of meters continues to grow with the population.
“The technicians regularly perform re-reads when meters get stuck or come back with blank or incomplete reads,” Jonas said. “We troubleshoot and diagnose any issues and are also responsible for utility meter maintenance, installations, programming, and repairing, as well as customer service work orders.”
Always eager to learn something new, Jonas says what he likes about the job is that no two days are the same.
Jonas strives to be impartial and fair to customers and coworkers alike. His deep understanding of the utilities metering and his genuine desire to serve the community have made him an invaluable member of the team at the City of Boerne.
His commitment extends beyond the workplace. Jonas takes pride in his role as a responsible citizen, always eager to contribute to the betterment of the Boerne community. He has many stories from the job over the last 20 years and is known to go above and beyond to help residents.
Jonas was born and raised in Boerne and raised his two children here, too. He credits the city as a great and safe place to live.
