[ARCHIVED] Boerne PD recognizes officers at annual awards ceremony

The Boerne Police Department held its annual awards ceremony April 18, 2023, and several officers were honored for exemplary service for their work in 2022.

The following awards were given during the ceremony:

  • Officer of the Year
  • Dispatcher of the Year
  • Top Gun
  • Fit For Duty

“The Police Department is home to outstanding officers and staff who work each day to protect and serve our wonderful community,” Chief Steve Perez said. “It is a privilege to recognize their work and share in their achievements for outstanding service and performance.”

James Vela accepts Officer of the Year award

Officer of the Year – Detective James Vela

Det. James Vela was recognized as Officer of the Year for 2022. He began his career with the Boerne Police Department in 1999 and has served in several positions in that time. He is currently assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division. In 2022, Det. Vela cleared 161 cases with 40 being referred to the District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

His persistence, dedication, and hard work bring resolution and justice to victims. He continually strives to provide the highest level of service to the community while mentoring his fellow detectives.


Krystal Bocanegra accepts award for Dispatcher of the Year

Dispatcher of the Year – Krystal Bocanegra

Krystal Bocanegra has been with the Boerne Police Department Communications Division since 2019 and works every day to provide communications for all public safety organizations in the Kendall County, including seven fire departments, EMS, the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, Fair Oaks Ranch Police, and Boerne Police.

Each year, Boerne PD recognizes a telecommunications operator as the Dispatcher of the Year for exemplary service to the department and community. Krystal brings a confident and calm approach to the 911 callers on the other end of the line. Her compassion for those in the midst of stressful and tense situations make her an excellent dispatcher.


Roger Fuentes accepts Top gun award

Top Gun – Officer Roger Fuentes

The Top Gun award is given to the officer with the highest hit factor in annual marksmanship testing, taking into account accuracy and speed. Officer Fuentes was awarded the Top Gun for 2022. He is also a School Resource Officer at Boerne High School.


Lisa Rowe accepts Fit For Duty award

Fit For Duty – Sgt. Lisa Rowe

The Fit for Duty award is given to the top performer on the annual physical agility test all officers must complete. Sgt. Rowe was awarded the Fit For Duty award among Boerne PD female officers.


David Chavez accepts Fit For Duty award

Fit For Duty – Cpl. David Chavez

The Fit for Duty award is given to the top performer on the annual physical agility test all officers must complete. Cpl. Chavez was awarded the Fit For Duty award among Boerne PD male officers.
