Boerne’s most cherished German heritage band, the Boerne Village Band, is celebrating their 160th (plus 2) anniversary this year! Join them for an exceptional Abendkonzerte summer season filled with fan favorites as well as special guests for your oompah pleasure. Gather your lawn chairs, coolers, and your German music-loving family and friends, for a Tuesday evening filled with Boerne heritage and musical treats. These events will all kick off at 7:30 pm on Main Plaza in Downtown Boerne.
Summer Schedule and Special Guests
June 7th: Das Ist Lustig is one of the most requested traditional German folk bands currently touring the southern part of the United States, with over 150 performance dates annually. They perform traditional German and Alpine music with high energy and pure love for the music they play. Their enthusiasm is consistently contagious in every performance. You can’t help but want to get up and dance!
June 21: The TubaMeisters is a quartet that specializes in traditional music from Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Mexico, and other countries. Their vocals are featured in five languages. The TubaMeisters will definitely entertain you with their special brand of music and humor.
July 5: Terry Slezak has recently retired as the premier singer for the Boerne Village Band, but he will return to Main Plaza as a featured singer for this season’s Patriotic Concert. He is a former NASA photographer and opera singer that hails from a family of opera singers in Europe.
July 19: The Round Top Brass Band was originally organized to play at the Round Top Fourth of July celebrations, which it has done every year since its inception. The band has performed at ethnic festivals throughout the state including WurstFest and San Antonio’s Folk Life Festival. The band is directed by Ronnie Sacks and will be joined by Larry Schmidt, Director of the Boerne Village Band for this performance.
A Bit About the Boerne Village Band
The Boerne Village Band was founded in 1860 by German immigrant Karl Dienger and has been honored by the Boerne Historical Preservation Society, Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce, City of Boerne, Kendall County, and the State of Texas for “keeping alive the German music as part of our heritage”. The band was recognized in 1996 by then German President Roman Herzog with a “Pro Misica Plakette”, Germany’s most distinguished award for folk music. Mr. Larry Schmidt is the current and fifth descendant Boerne Village Band Director from the original founder, Mr. Karl Dienger. After a two-year delay due to the pandemic, the Boerne Village Band is excited to share this special Abendkonzerte Summer Season with the public and their fabulous guest performers.
