[ARCHIVED] Grant to help library expand early learning programs for kids

The Patrick Heath Public Library is one of just six libraries in Texas accepted this year to the Family Place Libraries Project, a statewide initiative focused on early learning in children.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) launched the Family Place Libraries Project to help public libraries address early learning with the goal of ensuring children enter school ready and able to learn.

“Our staff already does an incredible job with children’s programming at the library,” Library Director Kelly Skovbjerg said. “This grant will help us build on the resources we already offer and allow us to incorporate new ideas and services to prepare the children of Boerne for success in the classroom and in life.”

As part of the project grant, two staff members from the library will attend specialized training and guidance on how to incorporate Family Place Library programming at the Patrick Heath Public Library. The Family Place Library model supports the essential role of parents as first teachers and addresses the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of child development to help build a foundation for learning during the critical first years of life.

The Patrick Heath Public Library will receive follow up support and training for the project for the next three years and is eligible for an additional $6,000 grant from state funds to further help development of early childhood learning programming.

Boerne’s library joins those of Eastland, Decatur, Del Valle, League City, and Laredo as the Texas public libraries accepted to the program in 2022.
