[ARCHIVED] City, local groups partner to beautify community spaces

Native Plant Society planting flowers in Veterans Plaza

In just two days, more than 100 volunteers partnered with city staff to spruce up several areas in the heart of Boerne.

On September 15, 2021, the Boerne chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas and the Hill Country chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist helped install new plants at Veterans Plaza.

Seven volunteers spearheaded the effort, and they were responsible for landscape design, plant research, delivery and installation. Not only are the plants themed to be red, white and blue in homage to the history of the plaza, but it will also serve as a pollinator garden to native insects and animals.

The following Saturday, more than 100 volunteers from First Baptist Church of Boerne rolled up their sleeves and spread out across the city to beautify four different locations.

The projects included:

  • Boerne Animal Control Facility: Fourteen volunteers helped weed and mulch planter beds, organize pet crates and clean dog runs.
  • City Campus Natural Area: Sixty-four volunteers helped remove and stack brush, remove old fence posts and wire, as well as pick-up trash and flood debris.
  • Northrup Park: Twenty volunteers helped paint 40 trash barrels that will soon be placed all across Boerne.
  • Boerne Skate Park: Twelve volunteers cleaned up the mulch beds around the skate park perimeter.

In total, 10 city staff from the Boerne Parks and Recreation Department and Special Events Office worked to help facilitate these projects, which were made possible by more than 130 volunteers.

In total, the individuals dedicated a combined 500 hours of their time for these projects.

The City of Boerne would like to thank the volunteers for being active participants in the success of our City and help us give back.
