Despite pandemic, city continues to enable learning opportunities

Four students from BISD Champion High School have been interning at City hall

Not even a pandemic can stop the city of Boerne from helping those in our community. As part of the 2020-2021 academic school year, four students from Boerne Independent School District’s Champion High School have been interning at two different departments within City Hall.

Starting in fall 2020 three audio visual students, Sierra Arnold, Piper Adamson and Christian Carrizales have been learning and assisting the city’s Communications Office.

In their first meetings, the group discussed what they were passionate about and sought to grow during their time with the city.

“This has been a great group of students to bring on board,” Communications Manager Chris Shadrock said. “I have enjoyed teaching editing and shooting skills and they have even shown me a few tips.”

The bulk of their time was spent working on one of the biggest multimedia projects the city has released.

In finance, Walker Butler has received a hands-on experience learning multiple areas of the department.

“We have enjoyed Walker working with us in the Finance Dept. He is a bright young man and eager to learn all he can about how the city operates and how the Finance Department functions,” Finance Director Sandy Mattick said. “Walker has been very helpful with completing several tasks related to preparation of financial reports, accounts payable, grants, and budgets.  As we work with him, we are explaining these various functions, so he understands how they fit into the city operations. We have also walked through the payroll process and explained the various rules and requirements.”
