Since the deadline to file for a place on the General Election ballot lapsed on February 12, 2021, and there was no opposition, the city was able to cancel the election of May 1, 2021.

“Although the statute requires that the city secretary make the certification to the city council, the city council is given discretion in declaring unopposed candidates elected,” City Secretary Lori Carrol stated in her message to council. “The city council may hold the election regardless of the unopposed status of the candidates.”

Council voted to cancel the election at its Feb. 23 meeting.

Oaths of Office for Mayor Tim Handren, Mayor Pro Tem/District 2 Representative Nina Woolard and District 4 Councilman Bryce Boddie will be administered at the May 11, 2021 City Council Meeting.

Please note, other local elections are not impacted by this and early voting will begin on April 19 and run through April 27.

Election Day is May 1.
