River Road Bank Stabilization

Project Overview

The City of Boerne is currently overseeing a major project at River Road Park to stabilize the bank of Cibolo Creek and install new amenities for the public to enjoy.

Bank Stabilization

The first component of the project is the stabilization and restoration of the bank of Cibolo Creek. The creek will be drained, and large machinery will be used to fortify the bank of the creek to ensure it can be enjoyed by parkgoers for years to come.

More clearly defined pedestrian access to the creek will be added along with a buffer space between the sidewalk and the creek bank to maintain the creek edge. Thousands of native plants and vegetation will be planted to improve stormwater runoff.

New Park Amenities

The second component of the project is the addition of new amenities to River Road Park. These include a new 250-foot pedestrian boardwalk and three additional fishing piers.

Project Timeline

The River Road Bank Stabilization project began in early September 2023 and is scheduled to be completed by spring of 2024. The project will be completed in phases with the bulk of the work set to be completed in the first 90 days.

Park Access

During construction, access to River Road Park and the portion of Cibolo Trail that runs through the park will be limited.

The trail will be closed from the dam at the eastern end of the park to the public restrooms. Other sections of the park and trail will be closed periodically during the project. Detour signs will be placed as needed to alert pedestrians. There will also be reduced street parking during the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below for a list of frequently asked questions. If you have additional questions about the River Road Bank Stabilization project, please email Special Projects Director Paul Barwick.

What is being done at River Road Park?

The River Road Bank Stabilization project has two major parts. The first part is the stabilization and restoration of the bank of Cibolo Creek. Large machinery will be used to fortify the bank of the creek to ensure it can be enjoyed by parkgoers for years to come.

The second part of the project is the addition of new and enhanced park amenities, including a new 250-foot pedestrian boardwalk and additional fishing piers.

How much will the project cost and how will the City pay for it?

The River Road Bank Stabilization project is projected to cost $2.63 million. The cost of the project will be split between the 2023 and 2024 City of Boerne budgets. $2,029,707 will come from the parks fund and the remaining $600,000 from the capital improvement fund. See a cost breakdown.

Will there be an impact to the ducks and other wildlife at the park?

The City of Boerne will drain the creek to complete the project. Once the water is drained, the City anticipates the ducks to relocate themselves. With the current ongoing drought and low water level, there are not many fish remaining in the creek. Attempts will be made to catch and release aquatic life during construction.
