Park Happenings!
Skatepark This January we broke ground on the long awaited Skatepark. We hope to have Phase I of the park open by late May or early June. The park will be located at the new community park site adjacent to Curington Elementary on Adler Road and will offer a 7,863 square foot plaza section for local skate enthusiast. Fundraising efforts will be getting underway to construct Phase II which will include a fun run and bowl section. The estimated cost for Phase II will be $250,000. If you are interested in assisting with fundraising efforts or making a donation please contact our office.
New Community Park (located 10 Toepperwein) In an effort to get the new park site (located at the corner of Adler and Toepperwein Roads) open and available as a usable park site we are constructing not only the skatepark but also a public restroom facility, playground, and public parking lot. The parking lot was completed in December 2009. The exercise/play unit will be installed this spring. The public restroom is complete and will be open and available to the public when the Skatepark is complete. We hope to have a “Grand Opening” of this section in June in conjunction of the completion of the Skatepark.
Pedestrian Trails We are within weeks of bidding out the pedestrian trails, approved in the May 2007 Bond Election. We anticipate getting started with construction in late spring with a completion in the fall. Again, priority was given to the Heart of Boerne, River Road, and Curry Creek Section I Trails. The Heart of Boerne Trail begins at Main Plaza, next to Ye Kendall Inn, and connects to the River Road Trail. The River Road Trail runs through River Road Park and will end at the City Park parking lot. Curry Creek trail begins at Adler Road at the new neighborhood park site at 1017 Adler and will run along the creek and end at Blanco. Most trail sections will be eight foot wide and will be constructed out of concrete. From River Road Dam to City Park there will be a short section that will be five feet in width. Each trail section will have distance markers, interpretative signage and unique trail heads.
River Road Park Up-Grades Plans are being finalized for improvements to River Road Park. The construction on the park will be done at the same time the pedestrian trails are being constructed. Up-grades will include not only the paved trail but also irrigation, sod, new picnic units, and will address the erosion problems. We have applied to TX Dot for Enhancement Funds. If we are approved, and if we accept the funds we will not start on the park up-grades and the River Road Trail section until early next year. We do not anticipate receiving notification of funds until later this year.
