Boerne Oak Wilt Policies and Protections

Spring is here, and trees and plants are blooming everywhere in Boerne and Kendall County! Did you know the City of Boerne has policies, protections, and ordinances to guard against oak wilt?

  • According to the City of Boerne’s Tree Ordinance, anyone who identifies an oak tree with suspected oak wilt should contact the City of Boerne Community Services department without delay so the tree can be diagnosed. If oak wilt is confirmed, representatives and City staff will notify the property owner. If property owners do not remove infected trees, they could face fines up to $500.
  • The City of Boerne removes all trees infected with oak wilt from public property inside the Boerne city limits. If infected trees are growing on property adjacent to public lands, the City of Boerne has the authority to request that property owners remove the trees. If the request is not heeded, the City has authority to remove the infected trees, and the property owner may be responsible for paying the cost of removal.
  • If you see a tree that you suspect is infected with oak wilt, please contact the City of Boerne Community Services Director at (830) 248-1635.

The City of Boerne does not plant red oaks or Spanish oaks on public property and discourages their planting on private property, as these varietals are particularly susceptible to oak wilt infection. The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the City of Boerne as part of their Tree City USA program for excellence in urban forestry management for the past 8 years. If you have any questions regarding other tree policies and protections, please contact City of Boerne Community Services at (830) 248-1635.
